ABOUT THE MILLENNIUM VILLAGES PROJECT

In the year 2000 - 189 Nations made a promise that all people were to be freed from extreme poverty. This pledge became the 8 Millennium Development Goals - to be achieved by 2015. Africa is falling behind with over 300 million living on less than $1 per day and over one third of Africa's population with no access to safe drinking water.

From these goals and Africa's struggle to achieve them, a movement was born. The Millennium Villages project is a new approach to helping rural African communities lift themselves out of extreme poverty and is proven to succeed. Take a look at the villages section to see some of the amazing results so far.

The millennium villages approach, uniquely, is based on community ownership and succeeds by addressing all the major problems simultaneously - hunger, disease, inadequate education, lack of safe drinking water and absence of essential infrastructure

The Millennium Villages action plans are five year plans to aid communities achieve goals that they set themselves and means that help is given exactly where it is needed - at the Village level.

For the first time in history, with the Millennium Villages project, we actually have the opportunity to end extreme poverty, disease and hunger in our generation.
